Victoria Park, the "People's Park", was the first public park in Portsmouth, originally opened in 1878. Thanks to National Lottery Heritage Funding, a project to restore and revitalise the park could be realised. The aim of the project was to use the heritage of Victoria Park to create a more inclusive space where local people can improve wellbeing, increase learning and access new opportunities. As part of this project, I worked with Portsmouth City Council and Victoria Park to create a resource pack of activities for children aged 4-11 years, centred around the unique history and offerings of Victoria Park.
This process involved researching the history of Victoria Park and how this relates to its attractions such as its historic fountain, monuments, and aviary, as well as understanding the range of flora and fauna which call the park their home. Following this, I developed and designed resources for a range of both group and individual activities that could be completed by children, with the aim of learning about and appreciating nature, understanding the rich history of their local park, and having fun whilst doing so.
The resource pack design involved creating a new visual identity for the pack based on the wider Victoria Park visual identity, including designing a range of animal motifs inspired by the animals who inabit the park, combined with a leaf pattern which represented the many species of trees which grow in the park. The resources included a resource pack book, presentation folder, individual worksheets, a park map, certificates, and reward stickers.
